The Henry Family

Since the 1880s, five generations of the Henry family have farmed in the beautiful Umpqua Valley of Oregon. Beginning in 1972, Calvin Scott Henry III founded Henry Estate Vineyard and Winery with his wife Sylvia. As Scott and Sylvia learned about cultivating the land for producing top-quality wines, their children also learned the trade and contributed to the growth of the vineyard.

Now, three generations of the Henry family operate the vineyard and handle all the duties ranging from winemaking and marketing, to running the tasting room and special events. Each family member contributes to the success of the winery based on their individual interests and talents.

The family is dedicat

ed to maintaining and growing Henry Estate as one of Oregon’s oldest and most prestigious producers of fine wine.
The pioneering spirit of Henry Estate has been
an inspiration to many newcomers in the Oregon wine business. That inspiration and spirit is a foundation for the entire Oregon wine industry, and will continue to build the legacy and character of Scott Henry III.
Scott Henry, Henry Estate Winery, Oregon
Calvin Scott Henry III (Scott) was born and raised in the town of Umpqua, which ment working on the family farm. After graduating from Roseburg High School and Oregon State University with an engineering degree, Scott pursued a career in California as an aeronautical engineer.

After a 13-year stint as an aeronautical engineer Scott and his wife, Sylvia, brought their three children back to the family homestead in the heart of the Umpqua Valley and decided to raise wine grapes. Knowing well that the climate of the Umpqua Valley is similar to that of Burgundy, he and his friend Gino Zepponi, scouted the family homestead for the best locations to grow grapes.
In 1972, the entire family helped plant the original 12 acres, consisting of pinot noir, chardonnay and gewürztraminer. The grapes were highly desired by wineries, thus the Henrys decided to produce their own wines using the high quality grapes themselves. The finishing touches to the winery were completed in 1978 just in time for the first crush. Scott, as a new winery owner and winemaker, released his first wines in 1980.

Always striving for perfection, Scott designed a trellis system that increases the quality of wine grapes for our particular site. The system soon became popular with select winegrowers, and the Scott Henry Trellis System is now adopted by experts from around the world.
Scott and Sylvia Henry, Henry Estate Winery, Oregon
Sylvia Henry was described as a busy woman who never had an idle moment. In between raising a family and volunteering in the community, she helped run Henry Estate Winery with her husband. She was an integral part of the winery's function and oversaw the fall harvest.

Sylvia co-founded the Umpqua Valley Republican Women, served as chairwoman of the Douglas County Republican Party, and in 1984 she ran for state senate. Besides her political activism, Sylvia gave to the community in numerous ways.
She served on the Governor's Council for Drug Rehabilitation and helped raise money for more bed space at the local ADAPT treatment center. She also helped garner funds to build the Community Cancer Center in Roseburg.

Those that knew and loved her will tell you she was recognized for her fortitude, determination and her signature color -- red. "If she put her mind to something and knew it was the right thing to do, watch out and don't get in her way," said her husband, Scott, about Sylvia's convictions. "She was very strong and very determined. ...
She was a fighter."

Sadly, Sylvia lost her battle to cancer on November 1, 2003. Together, her family members and the people who worked for her agree Sylvia was a strong and remarkable person -- a matriarch who made a tremendous difference in the community. She is greatly missed and will always be remembered. Her legacy still lives through the Memory Garden at the winery and the Sylvia Henry Memorial Scholarship Fund.
